Vermont and Snowy Owls

Last week in Vermont, on a cold and grey afternoon, we went out to see if we could find some snowy owls. And we did! What luck! My camera couldn't capture them as well as my eyes, and so in any photo I took you barely see a little blip of an owl. But, this was the day and the scenery and it was also pretty amazing.

Workaday Work

These Workaday Handmade bowls are so cool! I discovered them on a recent visit to Mociun in South Williamsburg and I love the color and patterns. The fact that the pattern runs inside the bowl too really seals the deal. Definitely want to add these to the prop collection. Hoping they'll also make some smaller sizes in the future... And maybe a plate?

More Holiday Cheer and Food!

Merry Christmas Eve! I love the holidays. I'm not a religious person, but this is just such a great time of year- taking time for family, friends, and lots of delicious and indulgent celebratory food. Hope you are all eating well this year! We're having a big meal tonight and then just relaxed rounds of hors d'eouvres and French 75s tomorrow. Everyone is making something, there will be cheese and olives and charcuterie, deviled eggs, baked brie, and much more I'm sure. But here are some of the snacks I am making for our Christmas day spread:

> Mackerel Rillettes. From David Tanis' newest book One Good Dish.
Or maybe I'll use smoked trout. Served with a nice baguette.

> Roasted Rosemary Almonds. Also from the new DT book. He's great.

> Arancini or Suppli al Telefono. Made with yesterday's leftover leek and
mushroom risotto. Inspired by the recipe in Canal House Cooking, Vol.7.
Serving with Rao's marinara sauce (yes, cheating a little and not making
sauce from scratch) and aioli (but it's ok cause I'm making this from scratch).

> Wise and Cheesy Owl cheese ball. From the Great Balls of Cheese cookbook
by Michelle Buffardi. Yes, a cheese ball that looks like an owl. He's delicious.
You can take it from me- I worked on the book.

Carrot Tea Cake. By the Martha Stewart team.

Now that I'm writing this I realize there is a surprising lack of vegetables... and a whole lotta cheese. Oh well! Someone will probably bring crudite...

Future Kitchen Dreams

In my future dream kitchen, the one that I own (not rent), the one that has enough room for several people to be in there, a large island, a big deep sink, exposed pantry shelving, a killer stovetop, two ovens, large freezer... In that kitchen these are the backsplash tiles. They are made by Exquisite Surfaces. Someday...

Friends and Cheer and Food and Wine!

Tonight I am having a few of my closest friends over for a relaxed dinner to celebrate the holiday season. I love cooking, and I love cooking for friends. The meal is simple, seasonal, and easy for me because most things hang out in the oven for an hour and are pretty hands off. The chicken is seasoned and hanging out in the fridge, but I have to run out at some point today and grab a few more things, which is why below there are some 'this or that' moments. I love having the day off when I'm hosting a dinner party, I can leisurely prep little by little all day. After the grocery stop, pavlova will be first up.

The menu is as follows...

BEGIN
> Fresh ricotta or farmer's cheese, drizzled with olive oil and topped with
black pepper, crusty baguette, castelvetrano or mixed olives.

MAIN
> Salt and pepper rubbed Bell & Evans chicken (which I scored
from a shoot!) stuffed with lemon quarters, whole garlic cloves,
and thyme, roasted on a bed of rosemary. I may season and serve
the pan drippings along side, as a jus instead of a gravy.

> Cheesy potato leek gratin. Plenty of cheese and cream (it's the holidays!),
maybe topped with panko. Smoked salt set out on the table for garnish.

> Escarole or chicory salad with garlicky mustard vinaigrette.

DESSERT
> Pavlova topped with ruby red grapefruit segments and whipped cream.
   Maybe a blackberry coulis?

Winter Blacks (And Navy)

Now that it's officially cold in NYC all I want to wear is big snugly sweaters, slim pants (always), and boots. I'll take all of the Acne options below, please. Boots with heels for chill days, flat boots for hectic, working days. Coin purse for good measure.

Portland

The past few months have been insanely busy! And my blog posting has reflected that. But December has been pretty chill and I expect it to stay that way all month. Getting lots of stuff done, including getting ready for the holidays, and back into the groove over here. To catch us up here are some pictures from a trip to Portland last month. My best friend lives there, and my sister lives in Seattle, so I go out to visit once or twice a year. I love it there. Good times and great food. I also got really lucky and got two sunny days in a row!

1/ The entrance to my bff's house, hidden from the street by all of those plants. She has the entire first floor of a house. I have a 300 sq. ft. apartment. So jealous.
2/ See See motorcycle and coffee shop. Went for some Stumptown and admired the interiors.
3/ Pok Pok! We ate at so many different, amazing restaurants, but I forgot to take pictures! (Whoops!) But Pok Pok was really a highlight, and the first time I had been there, even after all of my visits.
4/ A coffee shop in Alberta and the view of downtown Portland from Pittock Mansion.

Petite Alma

I love getting to see my work, and the greater work that I've contributed to, come to life! Petite Alma recently enlisted Alice Gao and me to shoot and style all of the imagery needed for their newly redesigned website. We even photographed all of their portfolio pieces. It's gorgeous! It came out so pretty. So happy to have been a part. You can take a peek here: petitealma.com

Le Wish List

Fall edition! This time of year still kinda feels like back to school in my brain. Anyone else? After all of the energy and activity of summer the feeling to re-focus on productivity seems to come naturally as the temperatures cool.

1/ Becksöndergaard cat print scarf. Snuggletime.
2/ APC makeup pouch to organize all the pens and random tiny things that float around in my bag.
3/ Nina Z braided leather clogs. The most comfortable work shoes. Socks optional.
4/ Mono notebook. Probably not getting my hands on this Argentine guy, but I am running out of pages in my trusty Moleskine so it will be time to find a new (maybe floral) agenda/note collector soon. In search of the perfect one.
5/ Zara leather tote for carrying all my junk and paperwork around on work days.

Clamlab

Bopped over to Clamlab the other day to grab something for a shoot and couldn't help but touch every piece in the place. Want everything. Clair's work is so beautiful and recently she has been experimenting with some seriously gorgeous new dusty matte colors. These new glazes kill me, they're velvety and mottled. My favorite way to do color. She has a super cute, inspiring space too. It was one of those moments when I really enjoy my job. Thanks Clair! A few snaps below.

Bright Lights, Fun Times, and Humble Gratitude

Very bright contrasty light in my friend's Bushwick studio space last week where a few of us got together to do a test shoot, just for fun and to make some beautiful images. These are a few 'behind the scenes' iphone snaps of the process. Was feeling very inspired and happy that day. I have so much to be grateful for, but sometimes I lose track of that in my hazy ambition. I know I touched on this a few posts ago- about stress and inspiration- I've been in a tiny bit of an up and down funk lately. But I stumbled upon this quote the other day, and though I'm not usually a cheesy motivational quote person, it really struck a chord with me and gave me a bit of perspective:

"And the days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really good days."

Happiness is easy. Don't be so hard on yourself. Relax. Appreciate.
The final images we shot up will be posted on my website soon.

Jumpsuits!

Crushing on these jumpsuits from Steven Alan that will never fit me because I am so short. Boo! But I can enjoy these cute pics and dream a little.

These Rule

Just a quick couple of fall Phillip Lim accessories I wouldn't mind adding to my wardrobe this fall. Out of the ordinary for me with the gloves too, because I have a rule about animal prints: I don't wear them. But lately I've been trying to just let myself like things if I am naturally and immediately attracted to them, instead of boxing myself in with rules. Let's break the rules. Let's break our own rules.

Northwest

A few weekends ago I was out in the Northwest for my sister's wedding. We trekked from Seattle, through Bainbridge Island, across to Victoria and up to Tofino on Vancouver Island where the ceremony happened. And then back. Lots of driving, several ferry rides, and for me, coming from NYC, a bunch of flying too. All in 5 short days that flew past.

It is beautiful out there. Seriously breathtaking. It's similar to the Northeast (pine trees, etc.)... but somehow bigger. Just much more engulfing and wide open. Below are a few photos I took of our travels and the incredible landscapes.

It really was that blue everywhere.

The Macaroon Bible

So excited about this stack of the Macaroon Bible cookbooks that I got in the mail in advance of its release later this month. I shot this book last year with Alice Gao and Vivian Lui and it is the first cookbook that I have worked on to be printed and released. What a great feeling to see it all come together and printed into a solid bound book! First book out in the world! I love cookbooks a ton, they are my personal favorite hobby read, so getting to contribute to the creation of one is really dream-come-true caliber stuff.

Anyway! Enough about me and more about the book! It's gooood. The macaroons are seriously delicious. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and I can't say I'm always tempted by the food on set, but I ate so many of these little guys. And brought some home to share with friends. The s'mores sandwich and the cappuccino are my favorites. Addictive. Drool. Also, the author, Dan, is hilarious and the book is really entertaining to read. All in all, so happy to have been part of this project. Good luck Dan, it's a great book!

September

So, August was sort of a wash. I didn't forget about the blog but it was a super busy month (Tons of work! My sister got married!) and every time I had a chance to think about posting something... I felt like I didn't have any good ideas. Blogger's block. I'm trying to be very consistent with posting but I've really noticed this month how stress can kill inspiration. Just was not getting really excited about anything, which I'm sure you have all felt at some point. My instagram feed slowed quite a bit too. But, labor day weekend was great. A nice pause to rest and sleep late, catch up on life and free up some mental space. Get ideas flowing again.
Getting back into the blogging groove simply, with these Small Batch Productions linen napkins. Beautiful, modest classics. I love that she makes them all herself in upstate NY and even notes that they are compostable after they're taken all the loving they can. I definitely want one (or a few) in each color for the prop closet. And for me personally? Probably the red and white stripe ones. More bright colored solids in the esty shop.

Apple Orchard

While unloading some of the 2k photos on my iPhone I found these images from back in the Spring. We took a late afternoon walk around an apple orchard and the sun was amazing- so strong on the horizon. The way it lit up the grass it looked florescent. All the trees covered in buds. And this abandoned shack was so boxy and geometric and rustic and alluring. Made me want to rescue it and turn it into a woodsy weekend get away.

Raccoon Thief

Oh man, this is so great. So funny! I love how he scoops the food up with his hand-like paws and then run-waddles off with it on two legs! Hehehe. I've been busy this month and have had a big gap in posting. Whoops! Hopefully this makes up for it. It's pretty hilarious. A friend texted it to me and then I found it here to post on the blog.

Water Boiling Beauty

I love this Kaico kettle. The day I decide I can justify $140 for something that's only purpose is to boil water (and be beautiful), this is so the one. Not available too many places, but Anaise has them and the product photos are great. The whole collection of modern shaped white enamel kitchenware can be seen on the designer Makoto Koizumi's website.

Dream Dinnerware

Love the simplicity and occasional abstract graphic pattern created by glazing in Julia Paul's work. What an awesome set of dinner dishes these would be, right? That's pretty much the definition of the good life for me: delicious, fresh food on a beautiful and inspiring table.
