Vermont and Snowy Owls

Last week in Vermont, on a cold and grey afternoon, we went out to see if we could find some snowy owls. And we did! What luck! My camera couldn't capture them as well as my eyes, and so in any photo I took you barely see a little blip of an owl. But, this was the day and the scenery and it was also pretty amazing.

Workaday Work

These Workaday Handmade bowls are so cool! I discovered them on a recent visit to Mociun in South Williamsburg and I love the color and patterns. The fact that the pattern runs inside the bowl too really seals the deal. Definitely want to add these to the prop collection. Hoping they'll also make some smaller sizes in the future... And maybe a plate?

More Holiday Cheer and Food!

Merry Christmas Eve! I love the holidays. I'm not a religious person, but this is just such a great time of year- taking time for family, friends, and lots of delicious and indulgent celebratory food. Hope you are all eating well this year! We're having a big meal tonight and then just relaxed rounds of hors d'eouvres and French 75s tomorrow. Everyone is making something, there will be cheese and olives and charcuterie, deviled eggs, baked brie, and much more I'm sure. But here are some of the snacks I am making for our Christmas day spread:

> Mackerel Rillettes. From David Tanis' newest book One Good Dish.
Or maybe I'll use smoked trout. Served with a nice baguette.

> Roasted Rosemary Almonds. Also from the new DT book. He's great.

> Arancini or Suppli al Telefono. Made with yesterday's leftover leek and
mushroom risotto. Inspired by the recipe in Canal House Cooking, Vol.7.
Serving with Rao's marinara sauce (yes, cheating a little and not making
sauce from scratch) and aioli (but it's ok cause I'm making this from scratch).

> Wise and Cheesy Owl cheese ball. From the Great Balls of Cheese cookbook
by Michelle Buffardi. Yes, a cheese ball that looks like an owl. He's delicious.
You can take it from me- I worked on the book.

Carrot Tea Cake. By the Martha Stewart team.

Now that I'm writing this I realize there is a surprising lack of vegetables... and a whole lotta cheese. Oh well! Someone will probably bring crudite...

Future Kitchen Dreams

In my future dream kitchen, the one that I own (not rent), the one that has enough room for several people to be in there, a large island, a big deep sink, exposed pantry shelving, a killer stovetop, two ovens, large freezer... In that kitchen these are the backsplash tiles. They are made by Exquisite Surfaces. Someday...

Friends and Cheer and Food and Wine!

Tonight I am having a few of my closest friends over for a relaxed dinner to celebrate the holiday season. I love cooking, and I love cooking for friends. The meal is simple, seasonal, and easy for me because most things hang out in the oven for an hour and are pretty hands off. The chicken is seasoned and hanging out in the fridge, but I have to run out at some point today and grab a few more things, which is why below there are some 'this or that' moments. I love having the day off when I'm hosting a dinner party, I can leisurely prep little by little all day. After the grocery stop, pavlova will be first up.

The menu is as follows...

> Fresh ricotta or farmer's cheese, drizzled with olive oil and topped with
black pepper, crusty baguette, castelvetrano or mixed olives.

> Salt and pepper rubbed Bell & Evans chicken (which I scored
from a shoot!) stuffed with lemon quarters, whole garlic cloves,
and thyme, roasted on a bed of rosemary. I may season and serve
the pan drippings along side, as a jus instead of a gravy.

> Cheesy potato leek gratin. Plenty of cheese and cream (it's the holidays!),
maybe topped with panko. Smoked salt set out on the table for garnish.

> Escarole or chicory salad with garlicky mustard vinaigrette.

> Pavlova topped with ruby red grapefruit segments and whipped cream.
   Maybe a blackberry coulis?

Winter Blacks (And Navy)

Now that it's officially cold in NYC all I want to wear is big snugly sweaters, slim pants (always), and boots. I'll take all of the Acne options below, please. Boots with heels for chill days, flat boots for hectic, working days. Coin purse for good measure.

The past few months have been insanely busy! And my blog posting has reflected that. But December has been pretty chill and I expect it to stay that way all month. Getting lots of stuff done, including getting ready for the holidays, and back into the groove over here. To catch us up here are some pictures from a trip to Portland last month. My best friend lives there, and my sister lives in Seattle, so I go out to visit once or twice a year. I love it there. Good times and great food. I also got really lucky and got two sunny days in a row!

1/ The entrance to my bff's house, hidden from the street by all of those plants. She has the entire first floor of a house. I have a 300 sq. ft. apartment. So jealous.
2/ See See motorcycle and coffee shop. Went for some Stumptown and admired the interiors.
3/ Pok Pok! We ate at so many different, amazing restaurants, but I forgot to take pictures! (Whoops!) But Pok Pok was really a highlight, and the first time I had been there, even after all of my visits.
4/ A coffee shop in Alberta and the view of downtown Portland from Pittock Mansion.
