Marc Forgione Cookbook

The Marc Forgione Cookbook is out today! I am so happy to have been a part of this book. It turned out fantastic and is one of the first cookbooks I ever worked on, which gives it a special place in my heart. Not sure when Marc first started the manuscript, but we shot it over a year and a half ago, so it has been a long time in the making. It's so great to see it come to life. Marc is a great guy, a really creative and collaborative person, and was so fun to work with. Congratulations Marc!

Easter Feast (Cleaning Out the Fridge)

Easter is becoming a sort of second Thanksgiving in my eyes. Religious views aside (because I am not a religious person) there isn't much going on on this holiday. There are no gifts, no fireworks, no distractions, nothing to stress over. There is the Easter bunny and chocolate, I guess. But really, it is a day meant to simply be spent among loved ones. Which, of course, is the perfect excuse to make a big, delicious meal!

This year I am not hosting, but I will still be contributing. And because our trip to Spain is in less than a week I am using Easter as a strategic way to help clean out the food in my fridge. Below, what I'm making. What are you guys making?

Deviled Eggs. I have never actually made deviled eggs and I have a dozen and a half eggs that I'd like to get rid of before leaving the country for a couple weeks. And it's Easter. Seems like the obvious thing to do. Going to base them on this Martha Stewart recipe and this one. And as an additional fridge thinning solution I am going to swap sour cream for mayonnaise (almost a whole pint in there to get rid of!). Have to see if I can get some horseradish at the farmers market tomorrow, and maybe some interesting greens or herbs. Might just end up being as simple and mustard and shallots.

Braised leeks. So simple and so delicious. Topped with a mustard vinaigrette. Again, if I can get any herbs at the farmers market I'll see about mixing them in. Not really a fridge cleaner (though there are a few left over sprigs of rosemary in there I could add?) but I have been meaning to make stock with some frozen chicken bones and this will give me the nudge I need to finally do it.

Pavlova. Four of the aforementioned eggs will be reserved for my new favorite dessert. I haven't made one since the grapefruit segments and blackberry coulis version I made around the holidays which was particularly fantastic, so I may recreate it. But I don't have any blackberries left from my summer freezing session, so I'll do a blueberry coulis. And, since I have a jar of lemon curd (that's been burning a hole in the pantry shelf) I was thinking of trying that out. Pavlova topped with lemon curd, blueberry coulis, and whipped cream? (A whipped cream made with the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that I am currently obsessed with.) Yup, gonna be either one of those combinations.

Yoga Mat Lust and Achievement Awards

Guys! I am so proud of myself, I have been doing a really good job sticking to my New Year's resolution of making exercise a routine. I think I just finally found something that works for me. I really don't enjoy the gym environment, so I'll make any excuse to avoid that. I love yoga classes, but if it's too cold outside or I'm feeling particularly broke at the moment, I'll talk myself out of it. But I finally just said no more excuses. None. And started working out in my living room.

The two best parts: it's convenient and it's free. Yea, I bought a DVD (Hey Jillian Michaels!) and a set of hand weights to get started. But I already had some loungy clothes and an old yoga mat. And since there are no recurring monthly expenses (people, a gym membership in NYC is expensive.) I feel like I'm saving myself a bunch of money. Enough that I can probably justify a fitness-related treat every once in a while...

That old yoga mat? I've had it for years, and now that it's seeing consistent action, it's finally starting to fall apart. It really held in there for a long time considering it was a TJ Maxx clearance find. But bottom line, time for a replacement. Perhaps like this very fancy, very chic Alexander Wang crocodile embossed one?

I also just started doing quick little 2.5 miles runs once or twice a week, and though I never considered myself a runner, I think my endurance is up from working out. I'm gonna keep at it. So, I'm looking for a pair of actual running shoes (just using my trainers right now) and thinking about these Nike guys. I love the how the design is made by varying weaves in the fabric. Really cool.

How are you all doing with your 2014 goals? Go figure, I'm having the most trouble with the "drink more water" one! Should be the easiest to do!

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design

I really want a backyard. I want to grow veggies, and grill, and sit out there on cool summer evenings just me and a book and a hammock. But a backyard is a hard thing to come by in NYC, so sometimes I feel conflicted and I think... Maybe I won't stay here forever? And in those daydreams, of a house, and a yard, and darkness, and quiet, I also daydream about what I might do with myself living somewhere else. (Because we all know my job is pretty location specific.) One of the options that has occurred to me is interior decorating or designing. For now it's really just a curiosity, a "what-if...", but looking at the portfolio of Jessica Helgerson's Portland based firm does nothing but inspire me. Probably nothing will come of these fantasies, but this beautiful work gives them fodder. And, of course, raises the question- Am I even capable of doing that? Whoops. Back to reality. But, what an incredible talent she is.

See Food

Some new work, made with my friends Ryan Dausch and Chelsea Zimmer, just for fun! And yes, inspired by my upcoming trip to Spain. Can't wait! It's pretty much going to be 12 days of eating seafood, drinking wine, and wandering around lush landscapes. Hopefully there will also be a bit of flea marketing. I hear Madrid has the oldest flea in the world! We'll have a weekend in Madrid, but most of our time will be spent in Galicia, with a maybe two day dip into the northern, wine regions of Portugal.
