Celery Salads

My spontaneous lunch solution shots have been popular on my Instagram feed, so it gave me the idea to share some of the recipes here. I use the term "recipe" pretty loosely as that is the kind of cook I am. I never measure anything and am always sort of improvising with what I have on hand. These celery salads are excellent examples of that. I shop at the farmers market as much as possible, and in NYC we're lucky to have farmers markets all year round, but what's available in the winter is limited and after months of eating the same veggies sometimes you need to get creative and mix it up. There's a line in a David Tanis cookbook that I love where he mentions the "dead of winter, grocery store romaine salad." Sometimes, you gotta cheat a little.

This is a longer post than normal, so click through to read the rest, including "recipes"!

Public Service Announcement

Please excuse me while I tweak the appearance of my blog. It's probably going to be a bit of a process, and you may see a few changes before it settles again. Not the smoothest way to do this- whoops! But, I need to do a little experimenting before I can make some decisions. Thanks!

Nisolo Shoes

I discovered Nisolo recently through their Instagram and love the simple design and amazing matte leather of their products. My job is so physical that I'm always on the look out for comfortable shoes to work in, but they still need to be cute. Both of the lace-ups are on my wishlist and come warmer weather, maybe a pair of sandals. The tote is the perfect size bucket to lug around all my folders/paperwork/agenda and just looking at it you can tell that the leather will wear so beautifully. Plus, they're do-gooders. All of their stuff is handmade in Peru with a focus on developing talented, but impoverished, artisans and in turn, their economies.

Stuff It

I guess I'm a little late on posting this story, considering this issue of Self Magazine came out about 3 months ago. But, I just started taking advantage of the digital part of my subscriptions last week and reading magazines on my ipad. That's where I saw this, published, for the first time. There's nothing like seeing your work in print, but seeing it on the ipad was pretty cool too. Also, I really want to try those sweet potatoes stuffed with picadillo.

Thanks to Christopher Testani and Jamie Kimm for a good time and some pretty shots!

Hi.

A picture of me on a New York city sidewalk in the middle of a chilly winter. Thanks for the photo, Alice.

Steven Alan for West Elm

The new collaboration between Steven Alan and West Elm is beautiful. Fantastic tones and textures. Super modern, but super relaxed. And, of course, stripes galore. The things that blow my mind the most though are the side tables... they are made of paper-mâché! How crazy is that? Looking at the photo, I was wondering why they look so organic. Maybe they were hand carved? But it's a table. Hand crafted. From paper. Really cool. Can't wait to see one of these in person.

Neutral Studies

Last friday Alice Gao and I both had a day off so we decided to get together; I'd bring a bunch of stuff, she'd have the camera, and we'd just play around and see what happens. Improvisation days can sometimes be the best, nothing pre-planned, everything just discovered in the moment. Very loose, creative, and relaxing.

Below are some of the shots from the day. I'm really psyched about what we can up with. I looove these tones and moods. Not a lot of color, I know. What can I say? I'm not personally a bright, poppy color person, and since it wasn't work for a client I could really just do what I was inspired by. It was a really good day.

Ederle

Stumbled on this online shop Ederle and am so inspired by its mix of goods and overall aesthetic. Just simple, every day things, but a great assortment of functions and textures.

2014 Goals

For most of my life I have not been a resolutions person, they seem to imply people's impulsive desire to join a gym and then quit two months later. But over the past few years, as an adult living in a large city, balancing personal life and a business, I've really come to appreciate the opportunity of the turning of a new year. It's a natural moment to reflect on what I've been doing, and what I would like to do more of. And then I can give myself an entire year to slowly effect change, to teach myself new habits. To take it step by step to achieve my goals, instead of being overwhelmed by the prospect of changing everything over night. Considered, curated, and self-proposed change feels great. I hope to never stop changing. It's my way of taking care of my life, and making it better. The beginning of a new year feels optimistic.

So, this is what I'm doing today. Finalizing my year's goals. And by the way, that photo on the left is pretty much what it looks like any time I'm not on set and working from home. My dining table becomes my desk.

A few of my goals for this year are listed below... I hope you've all made a few of your own!

Personal:
> Drink more water. Because I really don't currently.
> Eat less. I'm proposing a little portion control for myself this year. Restaurant portions can be huge. I love to eat, and so I can be at times pretty gluttonous, but there really is no reason that I need to take down an entire half pound cheeseburger and plate of fries in one sitting. Especially when I'm working. I want to stay light and energized, and avoid the food coma. No dieting though! A burger is definitely not off limits, just want to maybe cut it in half. And have the other half for lunch the next day... Mmmm. This is about being more in tune with my body and only eating until I'm not hungry anymore, and not until I'm stuffed.
> Make exercise a regular habit. These days people are living long lives, so I want to make sure mine is a healthy one too. Best way I figure to do that is take care of my body starting now.

Business:
> Re-brand! Hoping to have a new logo and maybe new design for the blog and my professional website in the next couple of months. Woo!
> Post consistently. I really hope to not fail on this one... but I'm proposing more consistent posts for the blog. If I fall off the horse, I can always get back on.

Really loving the muted tones, borrowed-from-the-boys silhouettes, and pattern on pattern happening in O'2nd's fall collection.

Carrot and Apple Salad

I came up with this carrot and apple salad the other day, which is surprisingly light and delicious. I like carrots, and I rarely peel them because I know that's where most of the nutrients are, but man sometimes they really stump me. They can be bitter and almost too earthy and I'm not always in the mood for that. But having just gotten back from my holiday vacation there was very little food in the apartment. A bunch of carrots, a couple apples, some garlic, and an onion were all I had in the way of veggies. At first they didn't seem like a salad, but then suddenly they did. And it was good. Those veggies + mandolin = Voila!

Here's a rough recipe:

5 medium carrots, sliced on thinnest, 1/16", mandolin setting
1 small apple, sliced with 1/4" mandolin setting
1/2 small white onion, sliced on thinnest, 1/16", mandolin setting

vinaigrette:
2 ts dijon mustard
2-3 ts white wine or champagne vinegar
1 clove garlic, grated with a microplane
salt and pepper
1 1/2 - 2 tbs olive oil

Slice all veggies, maybe cutting the apple slices into smaller pieces afterwards
so they are more similar in size to the carrots. Mix all vinaigrette ingredients
together except oil, combine well, then add oil and mix to emulsify. Toss
everything together. Feeds 2-3 people.

It's basic, but delicious, and who knows? Maybe I'll further develop it. But as is it's going into my winter salad rotation, because kale or cabbage salad gets old after 5 months. Also, I guess if I am going to keep posting about food that I'm making I should probably also show some photos... but um, I'll work on that...
