A Mid-Winter Radish Salad

I've been making this very simple radish salad lately as a seasonal substitute for the tender leafy greens and fresh bright herbs absent right now. Pretty much all there is at the farmers market in the middle of a New York winter is root vegetables, so you've got to get creative. But this salad gets close to that feeling of a bright, light and refreshing salad. All with storage crop radishes. We had some friends over for dinner the other night and I served this alongside our main, to a surprising amount of compliments. They wanted to know how to make it, so I thought others might too. It is a great way to use what's available now and it's very easy. Here goes: Grate on large holes of box grater, or fine julienne with mandoline, some sweet radishes. I used green meat, purple daikon, and watermelon radishes. Grate in one or two cloves garlic, using a microplane. Season with salt, a crack or two of pepper, twice as much cracked green pepper, and a dusting of Korean chili flakes. Add a couple splashes of rice vinegar and mix together. Drizzle on some olive oil and toss some more. Maybe top with toasted almond slices if you like. Enjoy.

Portfolio Update!

It comes but once a year... the giganto portfolio update. Throughout the year I may tweak, add or subtract, but generally in January, after a year of compiling new work, it's time to go back to the drawing board and dream up a total refresh. It's a process that definitely makes you feel mushy brained (so much thiiinking, and staring at a computer screen) but luckily my upcoming CA trip served as a sort of deadline and kept me on track and motivated. Feels so good to have it completed and launched! Take a look!

On a side note, this recent shout out from Alice was super sweet. Saying such flattering things, she's the best. The feeling's mutual for sure.

Prairie School Shoes & California Dreaming

I'm heading out to California in a couple of weeks (partly to escape the NY winter, mostly to have work meetings) and am so excited to explore LA and SF. Pretty much for the first time. Ever! I know I am going to find so much inspiration there, I can't wait. And of course, even though it won't be that warm there, it's kinda of putting my head in summer mode. Also, it was 16 degrees this past Saturday during my weekly walk to the farmers market...

Now you know why I'm posting about sandals in February, wishful thinking, and these guys are so cute I couldn't wait. Prairie School Shoes are 100% made by hand in Vancouver by a friend of some very good friends. Serena is totally cool, very beautiful, and super crafty talented. I keep flip flopping (Ha, bad joke!) on which ones I want but I think it's gonna be the t-straps... yea..

Oh! And if anyone has good tips for California, please share!
